El sistema visual es capaz de interpretar información visual de diferentes formas. Cuando las imágenes son ambiguas y presentan dos o más posibles interpretaciones significativas, experimentamos la sensación de cambiar entre ellas. Este fenómeno perceptivo se conoce como multiestabilidad, que también es un principio clave de las descripciones Gestalt de la percepción visual.

Las tres figuras demuestran una percepción multiestable, que se refiere a un fenómeno en el que las formas, imágenes y escenas ambiguas se perciben como formas múltiples y significativas, según los cambios en la atención y otros cambios subjetivos espontáneos (por ejemplo, la forma identificada por el texto o indicada por otro persona). La investigación, las teorías y la evidencia de la percepción multiestable generalmente se enfocan en la percepción visual, pero no es específica del sistema visual; este fenómeno también se observa con estímulos auditivos y olfativos.

La multiestabilidad fue observada y descrita por los teóricos de la Gestalt en el siglo XIX, y el fenómeno perceptivo representa uno de los principios clave en la visión de la percepción visual de los Gestaltistas. La experiencia sensorial de cambiar entre múltiples interpretaciones de una imagen / figura / forma / forma / escena se observa con los tres ejemplos proporcionados. Con la primera imagen alternamos entre dos posibles interpretaciones: flechas blancas o figuras negras que recuerdan algo a las cabezas en Isla de Pascua.

La segunda imagen (una Cubo de necker) tiene tres posibles interpretaciones: un cubo que mira al suroeste, un cubo que mira al noreste o una forma bidimensional que consiste en una serie de líneas que se cruzan con un diamante en el centro. Normalmente, alternamos entre las dos interpretaciones del cubo; sin embargo, a menudo es difícil forzarse conscientemente a lograr la interpretación alternativa cuando hemos identificado una forma de cubo en particular.

El tercer ejemplo de percepción multiestable es una imagen ambigua, que tiene dos interpretaciones comunes: un pato o un conejo. La alternancia entre interpretaciones suele ocurrir según donde nos fijemos; si nos enfocamos en el lado izquierdo de la imagen, generalmente vemos un pato, mientras que enfocarnos en el lado derecho estimula la segunda interpretación (es decir, un conejo).

Los tres ejemplos destacan el efecto inconsciente que tiene el sistema visual sobre lo que percibimos. Podemos fijarnos en diferentes partes de la imagen o intentar forzarnos a lograr una interpretación particular, pero en general está fuera de nuestro control. Si nos sentimos atraídos por una determinada interpretación por otra persona o la imagen va acompañada de algún texto descriptivo, a menudo pasamos por alto la interpretación alternativa, pero una vez que el sistema visual ha detectado la presencia de otra forma significativa, se experimenta la multiestabilidad.
