Los iconos pueden aumentar la productividad y disminuir la sensación de desorientación, confusión y frustración. Representan un ejemplo particular del diseño de la interfaz de usuario de apoyo a la memoria humana y, más específicamente, los procesos cognitivos denominados “recuerdo” y “reconocimiento”.

El objetivo final del diseño de iconos es aliviar al usuario de la necesidad de recordar cuando intenta ubicar comandos, acciones y cualquier otro elemento portador de datos dentro de la interfaz gráfica de usuario.

La recuperación es un proceso de memoria falible que está limitado por la capacidad de nuestros sistemas de memoria. Este proceso de memoria requiere mucho esfuerzo ya que debemos mantener la información de forma activa con un ensayo consciente (es decir, repetir cosas en la mente o practicar). Las interfaces de usuario deberían, siempre que sea posible, limitar la necesidad de recordar, ya que nos inclinamos a olvidar la información rápidamente; especialmente, cuando tenemos que realizar tareas entre la presentación de información y la posterior necesidad de recordar.

El reconocimiento , por otro lado, es un proceso “automático” que ocurre a través de la estimulación de patrones neuronales existentes formados a través de la exposición previa a la misma o similar información. Este es un proceso significativamente menos esforzado que el recuerdo, ya que tiene lugar fuera del control consciente y depende de la fuerza de nuestra representación mental almacenada y del grado en que el estímulo coincide con esta representación.

La lista de iconos anterior muestra cómo la flexibilidad que ofrecen las GUI modernas permite el diseño de iconos que se distinguen fácilmente, se identifican al instante y son fáciles de recordar. Utilizan objetos del mundo real para permitir el reconocimiento de acciones de la interfaz de usuario, como “agregar a la lista de lectura” con una imagen de gafas. El uso de objetos del mundo real de esta manera apoya el reconocimiento instantáneo de acciones, imágenes, iconos, etc.
