Lograr un atractivo estético es un desafío importante. Cada uno de nosotros tiene sus propias preferencias y aversiones. Desafortunadamente, elegir un enfoque complacerá a algunos, pero no a otros. Sin embargo, un aspecto del atractivo visual se aplica a la mayoría, si no a todos, de nosotros: la simetría. El sesgo perceptivo para interpretar cosas simétricas como más atractivas es inconsciente, y es muy probable que tenga su origen en cómo seleccionamos parejas sanas. La simetría es, por lo tanto, un principio que ofrece a los diseñadores una de las pocas (casi) garantías de mejorar el atractivo visual. Esto no es de ninguna manera algo arbitrario, ya que la simetría también sugiere orden y estructura.

No importa cuán elaboradas, moteadas o con volantes sean las alas de una mariposa, la simetría da la apariencia de un orden casi intencional. Probablemente, en sus primeros años en la escuela o en la guardería, colocó pintura en la mitad de una hoja de papel y la dobló para imprimir la pintura en la otra mitad para formar un patrón simétrico. La mitad por sí sola parece aleatoria y, para cualquiera que no sean nuestros padres, poco interesante, pero juntos hay un sentido inmediato de organización y estructura prevista. Esta capacidad de convertir algo tan aleatorio en un patrón percibido y significativo demuestra el poder de la percepción visual humana para influir en nuestra visión del mundo.
